Private jet Cessna Sovereign was designed to cover demand of North-American market for a jet that would cover direct coast to coast flights. In 1998 Cessna announced model that would be in between of Cessna Excel and Citation X. Passenger cabin in Cessna Sovereign is the same as of Citation X, but maximum flight range and cruise speed are not so outstanding, making purchase price and per hour costs not so expensive. Test flights started in 2002 and in 2004 type certificates were granted in USA and Europe.

Cessna 680 Sovereign passenger cabin height and width are the same as on Cessna Excel, but on Sovereign it is 2 meters longer. This allows passengers have more space and have different passenger cabin layouts including one with divan. Executive passenger seats back can be folded and each pair of seats can be converted into normal bed with smooth surface.

Front gallery houses microwave oven, chilled storage for catering, bar, storage of glass-ware and crystal-ware. Lavatory room, wardrobe and baggage compartment are situated in the rear part.

Two Pratt & Whitney PW306D engines with high takeoff thrust make possible Cessna 680 to take off from 1100-meter runways. Same engines are installed on heavier jets, for example, Gulfstream G200. Honeywell Primus Epic avionics system shows flight information on 4 LCD displays, providing high level of situation awareness.

New version of Sovereign was certified in 2013 – Cessna Sovereign+. Model with + index has new engines and avionics, new cabin interior design and longer maximum flight range.
